So far more than 1500 Free Eye Camps have been conducted in which over 13,00,000 patients have been examined & 3,00,000 cataract cases have been operated using Micro Surgical IOL implants. This is an ongoing activity and the Trust conducts 15 camps every month and operates upon 500 patients per month. These patients are provided with an attendant who gets food, snacks, transport and medications free of cost. The Trust runs an active Eye Bank, the only one of its kind in North Karnataka and one of the very few Eye Banks recognized by Government of India. It is also affiliated to Eye Bank Association of India. The government recognized and affiliated to the National Eye Bank Association. It collects about 400 eyes per year. We are modernizing eye bank to International standards. We hope to serve more than 1000 people in the next 3 years. This is actively associated with conducting awareness camps at various places in the community to appreciate usefulness and need for eye donations. Another prestigious project is to restore sight in curable Blindness to poor people under VISION – 2020 – Right to the Sight, ‘WHO’ project a Government of India project has recognized our trust for extending service towards curable blindness. We are on the executive committee of this programme. School Sight Programme is another important project in community service, jointly undertaken along with. Department of Public Instruction (Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan – Programmes) In this scheme, Trust help poor primary school students from Government Primary Schools. This programme has received the honourable President’s appreciation. These students when referred to us we treat them in full (Check-up/Spectacles/ Surgeries as required). We subsidize 50% of the cost. Eye Care awareness has become very essential. Hence more and more lectures are needed and are being conducted by our trust, in Schools, Colleges and Community Service Centres. Diabetes is being detected in a very large number of our population. Hence it needs to be addressed. Trust worked out programmes to meet this challenge, by means of arranging “Madhumeha Samvada”, addressing a group of Diabetic patients about Health Education and Screening them for Diabetic Retinopathy.

S. G. M. Eye Bank and Research Foundation Trust were registered in 1979 is a unit of well-known M. M. Joshi Eye Institute, Hubli. It has been rendering service to the rural areas of Karnataka through free Eye Camps from its very inception. Keeping the quality of service in mind contemporary updated scientific techniques are being followed meticulously. In the earlier period, camps and surgeries were conducted in the rural areas itself. More sophisticated diagnostic – tools and equipment came, new surgical methods had to be adopted for quality treatment, even for free eye camp.

In 2016, Dr A. S. Guruprasad won the same award in San Francisco, 34th ASRS Conference.
In 2017 Dr Shrinivas M. Joshi won this award in Boston, 35th ASRS Conference.
Again in 2018, Dr Shrinivas M. Joshi won this award in Vancouver, 36th ASRS Conference.
Again this year in 2019 Dr Shrinivas M. Joshi won this award in Hyatt Regency Chicago, 37th ASRS Conference for the consecutive third time! He also presented his research in Challenge the Masters’ session on Macular Holes and was co-instructor in two Instruction Courses. M M Joshi Eye Institute has created a record by winning four Oscar awards consecutively.
