Dr. M.M.Joshi, The Medical Director of M M Joshi Eye Institute – Been conferred with the prestigious “Padma Shri” Award from Government of India as a recognition of his yeoman service to mankind in the field of community Eye Care.

Early Life and Education

Padmashree Dr. Mahipathi Madhwacharya Joshi was born in 1935 in Nimbal village, Bijapur district, Karnataka. He graduated from Baroda, pursued post-graduation in Bombay, and trained under a renowned ophthalmic surgeon, which instilled in him a commitment to quality.

Commitment to Community Service

Driven by a passion for community welfare, Dr. Joshi has conducted 1,211 free eye camps, checked over 1.3 million people, and operated on over 300,000 patients, providing free treatment, food, and travel to underprivileged individuals from rural and slum areas.

Establishing a Visionary Eye Care Institute

After turning down lucrative offers, Dr. Joshi chose Hubli-Dharwad as his “Karma Bhumi,” becoming one of the first postgraduates in ophthalmology in Karnataka. He started an exclusive ophthalmic hospital, which, despite humble beginnings, grew into a reputed institution known for its quality services.

A Legacy of Growth and Impact

Dr. Joshi’s hospital has evolved into a 60-bed eye institute, equipped with the latest technology and highly skilled consultants. His institute caters to over 400 outpatients and performs more than 50 surgeries daily, solidifying its place as a key player in India’s ophthalmic care.

Dedication to Teaching and Mentorship

Dr. Joshi strongly believes in continuous education and conducts large-scale Continuing Medical Education programs annually. He mentors young ophthalmologists, encouraging them to be confident and self-reliant, and supports consultants in presenting papers at national conferences.

National Recognition and Awards

In recognition of his contributions, Dr. Joshi has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Padma Shri Award and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the All India Ophthalmological Society for his remarkable service to community eye care.
